Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College softball team showed two dominant performances over Olivet to claim their 16th and 17th wins of the season. Led in the circle by senior
Hailey Alspach, the Yeowomen took game one 7-1 and walked off game two for a 4-3 victory.
Alspach took the mound for game one and showed off 5.1 innings of stunning pitching, letting up just one run on two hits while earning five strikeouts. Sophomore Olivia Bey came in for relief and tossed a clean 1.2 innings, letting up just one hit.
The Crimson and Gold scored early with two runs plated in the bottom of the first. First-year Anjali Singh was able to cross the plate on an overthrow to third following her stolen base, and senior Maya Means launched a double to score Hannah O'Connor after she reached on a hit by pitch.
The Yeowomen kept it going in the bottom of the second, tacking on two more as a double from Singh scored Alspach and Aoife Shen to advance the lead to 4-0. Singh then scored on a sacrifice bunt from senior outfielder Haley Carlson to leave the inning up 5-0.
Oberlin tacked on a sixth run in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly ball from Carlson to score Shen. Though Olivet was able to plate one in the top of the sixth, the Yeowomen were unshaken and added one more run in the bottom of the sixth as Audrey Beckerman scored on a wild pitch to pad the lead and eventually take the game 7-1.
In game two, the Comets took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Unfazed, the Crimson and Gold responded with two in the bottom of the inning as Singh scored on a ground out from Connor Fogarty, and Carlson took home as Means stole second to take the 2-1 lead.
The Yeowomen added one more to their lead as Singh singled up the middle before stealing second and third, and scoring on the throw from the latter to extend the lead to 3-1.
In the top of the fifth, the Comets rallied to score two runs on two hits and tied the game 3-3. Oberlin bats were quiet until the bottom of the seventh as they looked to walk it off. After back-to-back fielder's choices resulted in outs at third base, Carlson entered the box with two outs and runners on second and third. After drawing a four-pitch walk, Fogarty came to the plate looking to give Oberlin the win. She continued to draw another walk, forcing Alspach to score and walking off the game with a 4-3 win.
Alspach pitched a complete game for the Yeowomen, allowing just five hits on two earned runs and adding three strikeouts to her season total of 114.
"Happy walking away with two wins today after yesterday's losses," said Head Coach Julie Pratt. "We have a very good team, and we needed to play with confidence and have fun to win."
Oberlin moves to 17-15 on the season, and is back on Tuesday, April 28th, with two away games against Baldwin Wallace. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. with game two to follow.
