Granville, Ohio - The Oberlin College softball team hit the road to take on the Denison Big Red on Saturday afternoon. Despite a very strong appearance in game one, the Yeowomenthe first half of the doubleheader, 4-1, then fell in game two, 10-0 (5 inns.).
Senior Hailey Alspach earned the start for the Crimson and Gold and dealt out four innings, giving up four earned runs. Alspach claimed three strikeouts in the outing to move to 106 on the season, officially breaking the single-season strikeout record set in 2011 by Melanie Budney '14. Cash Stone came in for relief in the bottom of the fifth to finish out the game, silencing the Denison bats and giving up zero hits.
After a slow start to game one, the Big Red took an early lead in the bottom of the third, notching three runs on four hits. They tacked on one more in the ensuing inning to secure the 4-0 lead.
The Yeowomen responded in the top of the fifth when first-year Anjali Singh scored classmate Aoife Shen on a single after she reached on a hit by pitch. Although closing the gap 4-1, the Crimson and Gold were unable to follow through and ultimately fell 4-1.
In game two, the Big Red rattled Oberlin's pitching with a three-run first inning. They added on seven more in the bottom of the fourth, and took a 10-0 lead. The Yeowomen notched two hits, from Singh and Shen, but were unable to score and fell in five innings.
The Crimson and Gold are back home tomorrow, Sunday, April 26 against Olivet. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. with game two to follow at approximately 3 p.m.
