Women Finish Second; Men Fourth at Case

The No. 26 Oberlin College women's cross country proved why they are one of the elite teams in the nation by registering a second-place showing at the Case Western Reserve Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore sensation Joanna Johnson torched the field by 33 seconds, cruising to victory in the 5k run in 18:38.

After taking last season off to study abroad, senior Nicky Ouellet quickly returned to form by finishing in eighth place with a time of 19:46.5.

Junior Clara Shaw placed 16th in 20:45, while sophomore Hillary Tipton completed an Oberlin foursome in the top 20 with at time of 20:49.

As a team the Yeowomen registered 69 points, while the host and No. 10 Spartans took first place in the 10-team field with 28 points. However, OC bested NCAC preseason favorite Allegheny by 37 points.

Senior Ryan King led the men's team to a fourth-place effort in the seven team field. The Glastonbury, Connecticut, native was the team's top finisher as he completed the 8k course in 27:34.

Fellow senior Conor Doss placed 20th overall with a mark of 27:53.

First-years Ben Schild (34th/28:46) and Stephen Williams (39th/29:00) rounded the Oberlin foursome that placed in the top 40.

As a team the men totaled 112 points, while the Case men matched the women with 28 points to finish first.

The Yeomen and Yeowomen will compete in two weeks when they play host to the GLCA Invitational at 10 a.m.
