At International High School in San Francisco, Merritt a was first-team all-league selection for three consecutive seasons … His junior year he was named league Most Valuable Player and Honorable-Mention All-City … During his three seasons Merritt led the team to three consecutive conference championships, two of which included undefeated seasons in conference play…Helped his class set a record of 40 home wins in his career.
