James Mayden enters his second-year on the coaching staff at Oberlin in 2020 and his first as the defensive backs coach after spending the 2019 season coaching the wide receivers.
Prior to Oberlin, Mayden served as a volunteer assistant wide receivers coach at New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU). In that role, Mayden assisted in film breakdown and recruiting while also being responsible for organizing official visits.

Over the past two summers, Mayden has worked football camps under former NY Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum while also serving as the football director for Trail’s End Camp in Beach Lake, Pa.

In addition to coaching wide receivers, Mayden has operational experience as a staff member for USA Football in the summers of 2017 and 2018.

Mayden started his college playing career at Rice University where he played wide receiver for the Owls for three seasons before transferring to NMHU in 2017.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in health and performance in sport with a minor in coaching, Mayden stayed at NMHU as a graduate assistant for marketing in the Cowboys athletics department while earning his master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in management in May 2019.
