Washington, Pennsylvania – Concluding the second day of the Vicki Staton Memorial Tournament, the Oberlin College volleyball team faced tournament host Washington and Jefferson. Though they opened with a strong attack, the Crimson and Gold fell 25-20, 25-22, 25-16.
Following her strong offensive performance throughout the weekend, sophomore
Mara Geiger was named to the Vicki Staton Memorial All-Tournament Team. Leading Oberlin's offensive force, the North Royalton native produced 35 kills, 7 aces, and 43.5 points over the three matches and 11-set weekend.
The Geiger duo of M. Geiger and
Kira Geiger led the Oberlin attack with eight and seven kills, respectively, while
Emily Spangler contributed to the offense with 16 assists and added five aces. On the defensive end,
Mary Lovelace tabbed 11 digs as
Nickiah Walker recorded a trio of blocks. The Crimson and Gold held a 38-35 advantage in digs, while the hosts finished with a 33-30 edge in kills.
Oberlin opened the match with their first four points coming from an ace from Lovelace and kills from K. Geiger, Spangler, and M. Geiger. Trailing 4-3, Washington and Jefferson recorded the next five points. The Crimson and Gold responded with an impressive eight-point surge, launched with back-to-back kills from M. Geiger. Slowly closing the deficit, the Presidents gained a 19-15 edge following a six-point run. Oberlin continued to execute offensive pressure, but Washington and Jefferson were able to secure the first set.
Early in the second session, the Crimson and Gold were able to maintain a slight edge over the hosts. Behind 11-7, Washington and Jefferson pulled ahead with a six-point run. Both teams continued to exchange points until tied at 17-17; the Presidents connected four straight points to gain the lead, which they were able to carry until they closed the set 25-22.
Jumping out to an early start, Washington and Jefferson extended their edge with a six-point run. Kills from
Kate Budde,
Brylie Peters, K. Geiger, and Walker were able to disrupt their play, but ultimately the Presidents were able to clinch the 3-0 sweep.
The Crimson and Gold will open their home season and premiere the newly resurfaced Philips Gymnasium on Wednesday, September 9, when they host Heidelberg. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
