New Concord, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team battled back from an early two-goal deficit and fought through a man-down second half, but Muskingum added a late goal to secure a 3-1 victory over the Crimson and Gold on Saturday afternoon at North Turf.
Walter Gomez-Torres led Oberlin with two shots, including one on goal, while Elmore finished with one shot on goal and the Crimson and Gold's lone goal. Lukas Verling recorded two saves in-between the pipes for Oberlin.
Muskingum struck just 1:38 into the contest to take an early lead. The host added another goal in the 20th minute to make it a 2-0 game.
Oberlin continued to create opportunities despite the early deficit. Gomez-Torres recorded a pair of first-half shots, including a shot on goal that was saved in the 27'.
The Crimson and Gold broke through in the 37' when Charles Elmore found the back of the net, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and sending Oberlin into halftime within one.
Oberlin carried that pressure into the second half, with Leo Pelizzari-Astle sending a shot high in the 53'. The Crimson and Gold's task became more difficult when Levi Whalen Stewart was shown a red card in the 72', forcing Oberlin to play the remainder of the match with 10 players.
Despite being down a player, Oberlin remained within one goal late in the contest. Verling made a save in the 87' to keep the Crimson and Gold within reach.
Muskingum added its final goal in the 89' to make it 3-1. Verling made another save moments later, but the Muskies held on for the final margin.
The Crimson and Gold will return to action on Wednesday, September 30, at 7:30 p.m., as they head down the street to Baldwin Wallace.
