Grand Rapids, Michigan – Traveling to the Great Lakes State for a weekend matchup, the Oberlin College men's soccer team faced Calvin on Saturday afternoon.
Lukas Verling returned to the goal for the Yeomen, producing eight saves in the 90 minutes of regulation. Calvin recorded 19 shots with 11 on goal, preventing Oberlin from posting a shot. The Knights also held the Crimson and Gold to a 10-0 edge in corners.
Calvin got off to an early start, scoring their first goal of the game at 2:30. The Knights earned back-to-back corners in the 14th minute, but the Oberlin defense was able to hold them off, preventing them from attempting a shot. Early in the 19th minute, Calvin extended their lead to 2-0 with a shot from just outside the goal box. Nearly halfway through the first half, the Knights' edge pushed to 3-0 with a shot to the bottom left corner. Verling held the hosts off for the remainder of the half with a trio of saves, as Oberlin looked to find some offensive action after the break.
The Knights carried their offensive pressure into the second half as Verling made back-to-back saves in the bottom center. The Oberlin defense of
Lucas Trinacty,
Luca Stephan, Kai Von Fintel, and
Hudson Gazdak halted Calvin from taking a shot for 13 minutes until Verling made another bottom-center save. The Liechtenstein native stopped two more Calvin attempts following a pair of corners.
Oberlin returns home on Thursday, September 30, when they host #30 Hope. Evening kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
