Oberlin, Ohio — Hosting their annual Leukemia Awareness game, the Oberlin College women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Penn State Altoona on Sunday, securing the win for the Crimson and Gold was Skylar Leung with a second-half goal in final 15 minutes of the match.
"It means a lot to come together to celebrate Averi and everything she has overcome," said Head Coach Taylor Houck. "Having her back on the field this year made today even more special. To battle for a 1-0 win and have her out there with us made the day truly meaningful."
Leading the team in shots, Averi Williams and Samantha Dorms took six apiece, with Williams finishing with two on target. Emma Boyles added three more, and Lexi Reynolds, Audrey Benson, Molly Button, Emma Molde, and Leung all got in on the heavy offense.
Asha Lock earned the start in net, collecting two saves before Roam Redington came in for relief in the second half. Redington added another save to the match and completed the shutout for Oberlin.
The Crimson and Gold controlled much of the offensive action throughout the match, finishing with a 23-10 advantage in shots. Oberlin also held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, both teams continued to battle for possession and scoring opportunities. Oberlin goalkeeper Locke kept Penn State Altoona off the scoreboard in the first half, including a save on a shot late in the period.
The Obies continued to apply pressure after halftime, with Williams, Benson and Dormer each recording shots early in the second half. Goalkeeper Redington also came up with a key save in the 58' to keep the match scoreless.
Oberlin finally broke through in the 76'. Boyles delivered the assist to Leung, who found the back of the net at the 75:56 mark to give the Crimson and Gold a 1-0 advantage.
Penn State Altoona continued to look for an equalizer, but the Oberlin defense held firm through the final minutes. Redington and the Obies defense protected the lead, while Oberlin created several late chances to add to its advantage.
