Hiram, Ohio – Opening their season on the road, the Oberlin College volleyball team took on Hiram, as the Terriers snagged the 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-20) victory.
Mara Geiger and
Brylie Peters both led the Crimson and Gold's offensive efforts with eight kills each while
Genna Gauthier and Geiger each recorded a pair of aces. Rookie
Emily Spangler launched her collegiate career with 17 assists while
Mary Lovelace and Geiger posted nine and eight digs, respectively. Rookie
Kira Geiger impressed on the defensive end, producing five blocks while
Nickiah Walker notched two.
Oberlin opened the match with their first five points coming from kills, with an additional point following an M. Geiger ace. Tied 10-10, Hiram pulled away with a 9-2 surge. K. Geiger disrupted the Terrier attack with a pair of kills, with Spangler recording the assist, but the hosts pulled away, securing the first set 25-16.
Hiram jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the second frame, but a solo K. Geiger block halted the Terrier attack. M. Geiger carried Oberlin's momentum with an ace as K. Geiger delivered a second solo block, allowing Oberlin to inch within one. Trailing by one at 10-9 after back-to-back kills from Peters, the Terriers recorded seven unanswered points to gain the 17-9 edge. Continuing to pull away, Hiram closed the second set 25-17.
Oberlin rallied in the third period, exchanging in early back-and-forth play with the hosts. Behind 12-9, a kill from M. Geiger preceded back-to-back Gauthier aces to tie Hiram 12-12. Both teams continued to deliver short rallies, but a 6-1 push from the Terriers gained a slight lead, as Hiram pulled away with the 3-0 sweep.
"This group played tough against a highly competitive team. I liked our fight and how we built ourselves up throughout the match," Head Coach
Jasmine Brown remarked. "Hiram showed us what we need to work on, and we're excited to get back into the gym looking ahead to this weekend in Pennsylvania."
The Crimson and Gold resume action on Friday, September 4 at the Vicki Staton Memorial Tournament, hosted by Washington and Jefferson. Oberlin will first take on Bluffton at 3 p.m., followed by Alma at 5 p.m.
