Oberlin, Ohio – Early Saturday morning, the #68 Oberlin College women's tennis team took a stand against #14 Kenyon. While Oberlin emerged from the dual match down 7-0, the scores did not match the hard work and enthusiasm the Crimson and Gold put into their matches today. This loss puts Oberlin's season record at 7-5, while their conference record is at 0-3.
Doubles saw some tough matchups against the nationally-ranked opponent. Doubles partners Rachel Allen and Hannah Soong went down 6-0 on court one. The court two pair of Scarlett Kingston and Eva Lopez found more success, taking two games from their opponents, 6-2. Stella Kollmansberger and Olivia Wollner lost at three doubles, 6-1, in a competitive doubles set.
Down 1-0, Oberlin continued their high-effort style that maintains focus on every point. Allen, at two singles, encountered some difficulties, going down 6-0, 6-0. Lopez on neighboring court three managed some resistance against her opponent, taking three games in a 6-2, 6-1 loss. Kollmansberger, pitted against Kenyon's one player, Eleni Lazaridou, took a 3-1 lead. But she lost the momentum, ending 6-4, 6-1.
With the result of the dual match decided 4-0, the remaining Crimson and Gold players managed to take more games from Kenyon. Kingston tied her first set 3-3 before losing at five singles 6-3, 6-1. Junior Freya Rahm played even closer, dropping the first set 6-4 and taking a lead in the second 5-4. But Rahm soon lost the lead, going down in the second set 7-5 at five singles. Wollner held out for an impressively long time, taking two games in the first set and taking her opponent to 5-5 in the second before losing 7-5 at six singles.
Next Saturday, April 11, Oberlin is pitted against Wooster in a road match. Play is expected to begin at 1 p.m.
