Oberlin, Ohio – After celebrating their seniors and dominating Wabash, the Oberlin College men's lacrosse team clinched their first conference title in program history, as part of a historic five-way tie for the crown. On the way to history, Oberlin beat the Little Giants 16-7, and finish with a program-best six conference wins.
"It was a great senior day, and great effort from the entire team to get it done today." Head Coach
Ryan Polak said, "I'm very proud of the team for securing our spot in the four-team playoff, and excited for us to have more time with each other and focus our attention to our game on Wednesday."
Seniors
Solomon Brennan and
Jacob Starcke led the team with a combined nine points in the afternoon victory. Brennan scored a team-best five goals, while Starcke added three and an assist.
Andrew Rosa also tallied a trio of goals, with
Edward Totry notching the first of his career.
On defense
Nolan Grieshaber and senior
Jake Pillsbury split halves combining for 12 saves.
Cooper Rand anchored the backline with six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. On the face-off both
Evan Sardina (7-9) and
Thinley Edwards (8-14) had stellar performances. Rookie
Quaadir Durden had his best game of his career going .500 at X with a pair of ground balls.
Within the first 75 seconds of the game, the Yeomen put away two goals behind Brennan and
Cooper Zancosky. The Little Giants got on the board minutes later, but the Crimson and Gold opened a 5-0 run from four different goal-scorers.
Asher Friedman, Rosa, Brennan, and
Anders Burrows all got in on the action.
Up 7-2 heading into the second period, Oberlin continued to outpace the Little Giants with three-straight goals to close the half.
On the tails of an Edwards face-off win, Brennan tacked on his 30th goal of the season to put Oberlin up 11-3 to start the third quarter. The final frame started the same, this time with three addition goals immediately following the first.
Jack Duffy and
Ryan Murphy tallied points in the run, clinching the victory for Oberlin.
"I'm really happy for our Seniors and their friends and family today," said Associate Head Coach
Thomas Klosowski, "We are blessed to be able to get back at it again on Monday and prepare for our next game."
The Yeomen were part of a historic five-way tie for this year's conference title, with the other schools being Denison, Kenyon, Oberlin, Ohio Wesleyan, and Wooster. Looking ahead to the conference tournament, Oberlin came out on top in tiebreakers to earn the No. 1 seed for the NCAC postseason. Ohio Wesleyan earned the No. 2 seed, Denison secured the No. 3 seed, and Wooster rounded out the competition with the No. 4 seed.
Earning the No. 1 seed for the first time in program history, the Crimson and Gold secure themselves as the host for the First Round of the NCAC Tournament next Wednesday, April 29. Oberlin hosts No. 4 Wooster for a rematch under the lights, set to begin at 7p.m.
