Oberlin Captures Historic Victory Over Denison

Oberlin, Ohio – Producing another historic victory on Bailey Field, the Oberlin College men's lacrosse team defeated Denison for the first time since 1960, when the Yeomen won 9-6. Prevailing 13-12, the Yeomen improve to 10-4 (5-1) on the year.

"I'm extremely proud of the effort from the team today, they played hard and stuck together for a full 60 minutes and were able to get a big win against a great team," Head Coach Ryan Polak adds. "It's time for us to cancel out the noise and focus on us."

Leading the Oberlin scoring, Jacob Starcke converted 10 shots into six goals. Solomon Brennan, Nicholas Cuda, and Asher Friedman recorded two goals each, with Brennan tallying a trio of assists.

Evan Sardina went 23-27 from the face-off, registering a team-high 17 ground balls. Colin Taylor added four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers while Max Revis and Cooper Rand combined for five caused turnovers. Nolan Grieshaber appeared between the pipes for all 60 minutes of regulation, delivering 11 saves.

The Yeomen got on the board first as Cooper Zancosky sent the ball to Starcke, drilling the ball into the net to tally his 40th season goal. Less than a minute later, Denison responded with their own goal off an Oberlin turnover. Starcke posted two more goals, elevating the Crimson and Gold to a 3-1 edge, but the Big Red responded with a pair of goals to match the home team. Friedman scored a late goal with 12 seconds on the clock, allowing Oberlin to maintain a 4-3 lead going into the second quarter.

The Yeomen surged to start the second, notching a trio of goals in just over two minutes to start the second frame. Midway through the session, Brennan and Cuda collected two more goals, extending Oberlin's advantage to 9-3. Sandwiched between Denison goals, Starcke added his fourth goal of the contest as the Yeomen entered the halftime break ahead 10-5.

Starcke opened the third with a goal less than 30 seconds into the quarter as the Big Red recorded four goals, closing the gap to 11-9. Following a quiet start to the fourth, Friedman produced a second contest goal with Brennan to follow minutes later, elevating the Yeomen to 13-9. Denison clawed their way back, reducing their deficit to one with under a minute until time expired. Winning the ensuing face-off, Grieshaber stopped Denison's Jonah Frank with under 30 seconds remaining as Oberlin secured the 13-12 victory.

The Yeomen hit the road one more time when they travel to Kenyon for a midweek contest on Wednesday, April 22. Opening face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
