Oberlin, Ohio – In a midweek contest with the Muskingum Fighting Muskies, the Oberlin College baseball team fell 6–1. In a game where the Yeomen offense could not get much going, first-year center fielder
Patrick Leonard registered two hits, and third-year first baseman
Kyle Baxt recorded three hits to lead the charge.
"I was able to see the ball well and put good swings on good pitches in the zone," Baxt remarked on his three-hit day.
Second-year Matthew Ruttkay got the nod for the Yeomen on the mound. Fresh off an NCAC Pitcher of the Week honor, for his 7.2 scoreless innings with six strikeouts against Wooster, Ruttkay fought through four innings. The Northbrook, Illinois, native surrendered seven hits and five runs (three earned).
In relief of Ruttkay, the Yeomen called upon first-year left-hander Shane McKenna, who fired two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two Muskies.
Following McKenna, first-year Quinn Bamberger recorded one out for the Yeomen before yielding to third-year right-hander Micah Rodriguez. The Simi Valley, California native delivered 2.2 clean innings with two strikeouts.
Trailing 6–0 in the ninth, the Yeomen scraped across a run to avoid a shutout. Baxt walked with the bases loaded to score first-year infielder Kyle Takahashi.
The Muskies escaped the jam and secured the 6–1 victory.
With the loss, the Yeomen fell to 13–14–1, 2–4 in NCAC play. The baseball team is back in action this Saturday, April 18, with a conference doubleheader against Wabash. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
