Oberlin, Ohio – In a weekend matchup with DePauw, the Oberlin College baseball team dropped both games of their conference doubleheader. The Yeomen fell 9–7 in game one and 4–1 in game two.
In game one, Oberlin jumped out to an early 2–0 lead in the first inning thanks to five consecutive two-out walks.
In the top of the third, DePauw responded with a three-run home run to take their first lead of the ballgame, 3–2.
Oberlin quickly responded in the bottom half. Third-year first baseman Kyle Baxt led off with a single up the middle and came around to score on a fielding error – off the bat of second-year infielder Sam Labrecque – from the Tigers' right fielder to knot the score at three. The next batter, first-year third baseman Robbie Lynn, laced a line drive into right field to give the Yeomen a 4–3 lead.
Getting the game one nod for the Yeomen was third-year right-hander Calvin Burkholder. Fresh off a complete game against the Tigers last season, the Aurora, Colorado native recorded five strong innings, with his only blemish being the three-run home run in the top of the third.
The Tigers retook the lead in the top of the seventh thanks to another three-run home run. The Yeomen were able to get one back in the bottom half thanks to a balk to make it a one-run deficit, 6–5.
In a back-and-forth battle, DePauw responded again in the eighth innings, tacking on three more runs to push their lead to four.
Labrecque led off the bottom of the eighth with a two-strike single up the middle. Then, Lynn walked to get Oberlin up with a scoring opportunity. A DePauw error allowed one run to score, and first-year center fielder Patrick Leonard lifted a deep sacrifice fly just short of the right field wall to plate another run as the Yeomen trailed by two heading into the ninth, 9–7.
Third-year right-hander Micah Rodriguez worked around trouble to keep the Tigers scoreless in the ninth, but Oberlin was ultimately unable to come back in the bottom half of the inning as they dropped game one.
Labrecque and third-year right fielder Brady Groves delivered multi-hit games in game one.
In game two, runs were few and far between. Although the Yeomen registered nine hits in the game, they were unable to break through for a big scoring inning.
The Tigers took a 3–0 lead into the mid-innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Leonard lifted another deep sacrifice fly to right field to score Lynn from third to make it a 3–1 game.
First-year right-hander Jameson Bryant got the ball for Oberlin in game two. The Cape Elizabeth, Maine native fought through 4.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) while tallying four punchouts.
The relief duo of first-year Santiago Serrano and third-year Davis Hayes was lights out, allowing only one hit and one earned run while striking out five in the final 4.1 innings.
DePauw added an insurance run in the seventh inning to take a 4–1 lead that would prove to be enough as they held on for their second victory of the day.
Groves, second-year designated hitter Daniel Krabill, and fourth-year outfielder Nik Mezzanotte registered multi-hit games in game two.
With the losses, Oberlin moves to 13–16–1, 2–6 in NCAC play.
The Yeomen are back in action this Wednesday on Dill Field for a conference doubleheader with John Carroll. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
