Singh Breaks Stolen Base Record in North Coast Battle Against DePauw

By Roxie Freifeld '27

Greencastle, Indiana – The Oberlin College softball team took on DePauw in a conference doubleheader this afternoon. After falling 10-0 in game one, the Yeowomen put up a fight against the No. 1 team in the North Coast Athletic Conference, but ultimately were settled at 6-3.

Oberlin was able to put out baserunners in the top of the first inning after Hannah O'Connor was hit by a pitch, followed by a reach on error from Connor Fogarty. With a chance to take the early lead, second-year Ava Soldo came to the plate but was unable to deliver on the opportunity.

Tiger's pitching silenced Oberlin offense through the rest of game one, allowing no one on base to claim game one 10-0 (5 inns.).

The Yeowomen started strong in game two, starting with a sharp liner to right center from Anjali Singh. Singh then snatched second with her 25th stolen base of the season, breaking Oberlin's previous record of 24 in just 24 games. Now in scoring position, she easily crossed the plate on O'Connor's subsequent double, giving the Yeowomen a 1-0 lead.

A simple single from Fogarty brought O'Connor to third. Fogarty stole second to send Soldo up to bat with runners in scoring position. A soft ground ball resulted in a fielder's choice and RBI, scoring O'Connor from third. The Crimson and Gold left the first inning up 2-0.

Again in the top of the third, the Yeowomen were able to tack on another run as Soldo's base hit scored O'Connor after reaching on a fielder's choice and stealing second and third, now extending the lead to 3-0.

Senior pitcher Hailey Alspach earned the start for Oberlin and was golden over the Tigers through three innings, not allowing a single runner aboard.

Oberlin bats continued to rally in the fourth after senior infielder Maya Means smacked a double to the left-center gap and to third on a sacrifice bunt from first-year Caroline Sniffen. However, Aoife Shen came up empty-handed at the plate to end the inning.

After securing the first out in the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers began to rally the hits as they plated two runs on three hits to close the gap to 3-2.

The score settled through the fifth and top of the sixth before DePauw opened up in the bottom of the sixth. The Tigers tallied four more runs on four hits to claim the 6-3 lead over the Yeowomen. Unable to score in the top of the seventh, Oberlin ultimately fell 6-3 to end the game.

The Yeowomen even out to 12-12 on the season before they are back tomorrow, April 12th at Ohio Wesleyan for another conference twin-bill. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m., with game two at approximately 3 p.m.
