Delaware, Ohio – The Oberlin College softball team dominated in today's conference double header against Ohio Wesleyan, sweeping the Battling Bishops in a run-rule and a come-from-behind victory. The Yeowomen easily took game one 11-3 (5 inns.) and battled through game two for a 6-5 victory. Oberlin moved to 14 wins of the season, tying the school record for single-season wins set in 2012.
Senior pitcher Hailey Alspach started game one for the Crimson and Gold, eventually going four innings, earning seven strikeouts, and letting up just one hit and two walks.
First-year outfielder Anjali Singh started it off with a simple single through the five-six hole to send herself to first, followed by a stolen base to snag second. Senior Haley Carlson then dropped a sacrifice bunt to send Singh to third base and set her up to score on Hannah O'Connor's following ground ball to take the early 1-0 lead.
Momentum continued as outfielder Connor Fogarty singled and advanced to second on the next wild pitch. Ava Soldo continued with a walk, allowing Fogarty to advance to third on the fourth ball and wild pitch. Pinch runner Wren Norris took over for Soldo at first and quickly stole second to set up two runners in scoring position for senior Maya Means. Means laced a single to right field to plate both Fogarty and Wren to extend the lead to 3-0 coming out of the first inning.
Hits continued to rally through the top of the second as first-year Aoife Shen punched a one-out single through the right side before snagging second base on the next pitch. Singh notched a second hit, sending Shen to third. Carlson dropped a second bunt as Shen took off from third to score and advance the Yeowomen to 4-0. A double steal sent Singh to third and Carlson to second just before Singh scored on O'Connor's sacrifice fly. Fogarty capped out the inning with an RBI single to score Carlson and exit with a 6-0 lead.
Though quiet through the third inning, Yeowomen bats picked up again in the top of the fourth as Alspach led off with a single. After advancing to third on a bunt base hit from Shen, she easily scored on a wild pitch that rolled to the backstop to tack on the seventh run of the game. With Shen now at third, Carlson launched a sacrifice fly to earn herself another RBI and send the Crimson and Gold up 8-0 at the end of the fourth.
Sophomore Olivia Bey relieved Alpsach in the bottom of the fourth inning and sent the Battling Bishops back to the dugout in a one-two-three inning.
Into the top of the fifth, first-year Caroline Sniffen took first on a two-out hit by pitch. Pinch runner Roxie Freifeld came in and swiftly stole second base just before advancing to third on a wild pitch. In scoring position, Freifeld came around to score on Bey's RBI single on the pitcher's first hitting appearance of the season, extending the lead to 9-0. After Shen reached on an Ohio Wesleyan error to place runners at second and third, Singh launched a base-clearing triple, earning herself two RBIs and adding an 11-0 lead.
With the chance to secure the five-inning win, the Yeowomen looked to shut the Battling Bishops down one more. After plating three runs themselves, Alspach returned to the circle to finish the game, ultimately claiming the 11-3 win.
Momentum was high going into game two, and the Yeowomen showed it by once again scoring first in the top of the second. Oberlin put up a three-run inning, totaling four hits from Singh, Carlson, O'Connor, and Soldo.
Ohio Wesleyan was able to plate one run in the bottom of the second, and the score settled until the bottom of the fourth as the Battling Bishops managed to squeeze out a four-run inning to take the lead 5-3.
Unable to drop hits in the fifth, Ohio Wesleyan maintained their lead. The Yeowomen were able to tack on one more run in the top of the sixth with an RBI single from Means to score Carlson and close the gap 4-5.
With gas still left in the tank, the Crimson and Gold began their come-from-behind win in their last chance at bat. Shen led off with a walk and advanced to second on Alspach's base hit. A groundout from Singh moved runners to second and third before Carlson launched a sacrifice fly to score Shen and tie the game 5-5. Moving to third on a wild pitch, Alspach was then set up to score on O'Connor's following RBI single as the Yeowomen took the 6-5 lead.
Alspach started and finished the game in the circle, shutting out the Battling Bishops in the bottom of the seventh. The California-native pitched a total of 11 innings between two games and racked up 12 strikeouts. The two wins on the day bring her season total to nine, breaking the school record for single-season pitching wins.
"I think the team is doing a really good job stringing together hits when we have runners on base," said Carlson. "And that is pivotal to our success today."
"Today proved this team knows how to win! I am proud to lead this 2026 to a record-breaking year," added Head Coach Julie Pratt. "Congrats to Hailey on breaking the season record for [pitching] wins and Anjali for the stolen base records."
The Crimson and Gold return home for a non-conference double header this Wednesday, April 15th, against Olivet. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. with game two to follow at approximately 5 p.m.
