Yeomen Battle with Knights and Finish Spring Break Undefeated

By Rowan Ing '28

Hilton Head, South Carolina – Completing an undefeated spring break trip, the Oberlin College men's tennis team earned a big, 6-1 victory against Carleton on Wednesday afternoon. Marking their third and final spring break match, the Yeomen improve to 9-3 on the season.

Whether it be the warmer temperatures or the slower winds, the doubles matches today were filled with amazing plays from the Yeomen. Shawn Lisann and Cameron Weiss at No. 1 returned with stronger coordination, landing their lobs, volleys, and overheads. The duo won their court 6-1. The pair at No. 2 doubles, Zain Makada and Enrique Margain, ran into trouble. Though they played well, serves from Carleton's Yihe Zhang tore through the pair's return game. Zhang's partner, Zach Leslie, also eluded their ground stroke attacks, resulting in a 6-1 loss. Under pressure to win the doubles point, Sebastien Naginski and Dash Smith showed the power of their bond and won the match, 6-4, along with the doubles point.

Up 1-0, the momentum swayed in the Yeomen's favor. Proving once again to be one of the more reliable players on the team, Weiss ended first in a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles. Naginski followed suit, often commenting, "Let's get to work" throughout the match to help him achieve a 6-1, 6-3 win.

Leading 3-0, the Crimson and Gold had some tougher matches ahead. Makada had been in the lead, but only by a short margin, winning his first set from 5-4 up and a deuce point. Zach Leslie from Carleton struck back in the second set with some impressive plays and won the second set 6-1. But Makada was able to regain the momentum, serving his way to a 10-6 win, making for the junior's first clinch.

On neighboring court four, Margain faced more difficulties. Though he covered the court with precision, landing running shots and an impressive sliding backhand slice behind his back, the sophomore was beaten by Ezra Bernhard 7-5, 6-2. Lisann's match at No. 2 singles faced similar hardships with his opponent running him from corner to corner of the court. But the senior endured the brutal first and second sets, finding a path towards a 7-5, 6-2 win.

Even with the dual match over, Smith worked hard towards a victory on court one, defeating a rival player from his high school days and settling the score, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

"It feels great. I had a feeling that we were all going to do well. But to be the one to clinch since…ever. It is a really cool experience," Makada said on his first clinch. "Deuce points, break points, and set points in any tennis match are so volatile. So to be able to get those points is something I've been working on since freshman year, and I have been able to get better and better at it. For it to come to fruition now is such good [timing] for me and the team."

The Yeomen take a well-deserved rest for the remainder of spring break. Returning home, their next match will be against Kenyon on April 4. The match will begin at 1 p.m. on the Hunsinger Courts.
