Oberlin Sets New Season-High Score in Monday Sweep

By Roxie Freifeld ’27

Clermont, Florida – The Oberlin College softball team rallied on day two of THE Spring Games for a clean sweep over Lawrence and North Central. Seniors Haley Carlson and Maya Means led game one with three hits apiece as the Yeowomen posted a 10-2 victory over Lawrence. Oberlin took game two 13-5 (6 inn.), boasting their highest scoring game yet.

"Not only are we good, now we're run-ruling teams. We're closing the door before seven innings, and that's huge for us. We have a great team," Head Coach Julie Pratt adds after today's pair of victories.

Hailey Alspach's start on the mound took the Yeowomen through five scoreless innings, letting up just three hits, no walks, and five strikeouts. Relief from sophomore Cash Stone closed out the game with just two runs allowed.

Oberlin started early in game one with an RBI from first-year outfielder Connor Fogarty to post a 1-0 lead at the end of the first. In the fourth, a triple from Means brought around Caroline Sniffen, just before Means safely took home to score herself and put the Yeowomen up 3-0. In the fifth, another liner from Fogarty scored Anjali Singh, continuing the scoring streak and moving up 4-0. A final ground ball from Sniffen gave Oberlin the 5-0 lead exiting the fifth inning.

Two runs from Lawrence didn't shake the Crimson and Gold as they put up five more in the top of the seventh to seal the win. A rally of hits from Alspach, Carlson, Hannah O'Connor, Sniffen, and Ava Soldo secured game one for Oberlin.

In game two, North Central took the lead in the first with two runs on three hits off Stone. A pitching takeover from Olivia Bey settled the Rams and gave Oberlin its chance to score. Although unable to score through two, the Yeowomen got themselves on the board with a double from Aoife Shen, who quickly crossed home on Singh's single to right field. A single from Carlson and a trio of throwing errors from North Central scored both Singh and Carlson to end the inning, just trailing 4-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, back-to-back errors from the Rams allowed Singh and Carlson to reach first, with Singh scoring on the latter. O'Connor's rocket to left center easily scored Carlson, putting the Yeowomen up 5-4. Another RBI from Fogarty brought around O'Connor to go up 6-4. With the bases loaded, Soldo walked to tally on another run at 7-4. Shen's two-out single scored Sniffen and pinch runner Roxie Freifeld before a final two runs from Singh and Shen concluded the season-high eight-run inning and the 11-4 edge.

After a run scored for the Rams in the top of the sixth, Oberlin returned in the final offensive outing of the game, with a run scored from Emily Sewell to go up 12-5, and a final RBI from Sniffen to end the game in six innings with a final score of 13-5.

"I feel like the team is really strong, we are united as a front to win, we know what to do and are executing well and we are having so much fun together!" Bey adds.

Oberlin's outing today totaled 11 stolen bases with two each from Singh, Shen, and Alspach, bringing the team's total to 80 this season, marking the highest in the conference.

"I think the energy of the team and stringing hits is what drove us to a two-win game. We are playing with each other and for each other," Carlson continues.

The Yeowomen moved to 11-3 on the season with two games left in Florida. Tune in tomorrow, Tuesday, March 24th, as the Yeowomen face Union at 10 a.m. and follow with Colby at 12:15 p.m.
