Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Kumler Leads Crimson and Gold in Conference Showdown

Wooster, Ohio - Making the short trip for a midweek matchup, the Oberlin College women's basketball team faced Wooster on Wednesday evening. Despite a strong fourth-quarter comeback, the Crimson and Gold fell short as the Fighting Scots secured the victory, 60-57.

Angela Kumler led the scoring surge, producing 25 points, four steals, and three blocks. Krystal Montas and Gabby Peña-Hilzen both finished with double-digit points, adding 12 and 11, respectively, and combining for nine rebounds. On the Crimson and Gold defense, the duo of Lily Najmulski and Samantha Dormer combined for 11 rebounds with Najmulski adding three steals.

The North Coast opponents went point-for-point in the opening five minutes of the contest until Oberlin posted a 7-0 run starting at 3:37. Breaking up the Wooster offense, Najmulski stole the possession, allowing for Kumler to notch the fastbreak layup from Dormer. Najmulski continued with the next five points, recording a three-pointer and a layup, helping the Yeowomen to close out the first period on top.

The Fighting Scots launched the second quarter with back-to-back layups to tie Oberlin at 14-14. Trailing 20-18, Wooster registered a 7-0 surge to gain a slight advantage over the Crimson and Gold. Oberlin fought their way to come within two, but the home team worked their way back to a five-point edge leading into the halftime break.

Wooster found a new rhythm following the break, opening the frame with nine unanswered points in the first five minutes. Kumler registered the next seven points for Oberlin without response from the Fighting Scots to cut the deficit in half until a Wooster triple ended the streak. Kumler and Peña-Hilzen combined for an additional four points, but Wooster maintained the advantage leading into the final session.

Behind 52-40, Montas added five points off a trio of free throws and a layup to close the gap. The Fighting Scots momentarily disrupted Oberlin's rhythm until the Crimson and Gold dished out a 6-0 run to come within three.

With less than 90 seconds until time expired, Kumler delivered a jumper, pushing Wooster to call a timeout. Following the short break, Najmulski stole the possession, allowing for Kumler to notch a layup and trail Wooster by one with 0:36 on the clock. Oberlin struggled with foul trouble towards the end as the Fighting Scots made both free throws to clinch the narrow victory.

The Crimson and Gold return to action on Saturday, February 7, when they travel to the Hoosier State to take on DePauw. Afternoon tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
