University Heights, Ohio - Gabby Peña-Hilzen registered a career night as the Oberlin College women's basketball team battled against #10 John Carroll on Wednesday night. Competing in their final road contest of the regular season, Oberlin fell 81-41.
Leading the Crimson and Gold with her first career double-double, Peña-Hilzen delivered 13 points and 10 rebounds. Krystal Montas also finished with double-digit points, adding 12 to the board along with five rebounds, a pair of blocks, and a pair of steals.
Oberlin opened the match with a strong start against the nationally-ranked hosts. Trailing 4-2, the Crimson and Gold produced 10 unanswered points in three minutes, led by six straight points from Peña-Hilzen and layups from Lily Najmulski and Angela Kumler. The Blue Streaks quickly responded with the next eight points to tie Oberlin to end the first quarter.
John Carroll returned to the second period, administering a strong offensive pressure opening with the first five points. Katherine Csiszar returned to the court with a layup to keep Oberlin close but the Blue Streaks pulled away, posting a significant margin before the halftime break.
Montas and Peña-Hilzen recorded back-to-back points early in the third, aiming to revive an Oberlin surge. The Yeowomen were able to break up JCU's scoring, preventing the hosts from scoring more than five straight points in the session. Despite that, Oberlin was unable to reduce the margin leading into the final frame.
Montas added the first four points for Oberlin with a layup and pair of free throws to start the final session. With 3:37 remaining on the clock, Noa Brown notched a jumper that was quickly followed by a fast break layup from Montas after Ellie Pollock-Ballard stole the ball from John Carroll's possession. Running out of time, Oberlin dropped the road contest to the nationally-ranked opponents.
The Crimson and Gold will return to Philips for the final game of the regular season on Saturday, February 21, when they host Kenyon. Upon conclusion of their senior day celebration, tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
