Westlake, Ohio – After nothing short of a historic week for
Namu Makatiani, the North Coast Athlete Conference has named the Oberlin College track and field senior the Athlete of the Week.
"Namu hadn't lost a regular season competition in triple jump in over a year, Head Coach
Ben Wach continues, "seeing him rise to meet a higher level of competition and come away with a new school record is both a moment to celebrate and a great sign of what's to come."
Makatiani delivered a historic performance at the Music City Challenge at Vanderbilt, resetting his own school record in the triple jump against elite competition.
The senior soared 14.81m to place sixth overall in a field comprised primarily of Division I athletes, standing as the lone Division III competitor. The mark eclipses his previous indoor school record (14.55m), ties his indoor and outdoor personal best, and matches the outdoor program record.
Now ranked eighth nationally in Division III and the top in the conference, Makatiani continues to elevate the standard for Oberlin jumps on both the conference and national stage.
With the NCAC Indoor Track and Field Championships approaching, Makatiani rests this weekend while a select group of student-athletes compete at the NCAC Combined Events Championships on Saturday, February 21.
