Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team secured a 5-2 win over Rochester to finish 2–1 on the weekend, sweeping doubles and taking four singles courts.
In doubles, the Yeomen earned the point with three wins. First, seniors
Shawn Lisann and
Sebastien Naginski won 6-2. This marks Lisann's 73rd career collegiate victory, including both doubles and singles competition. Clinching the doubles point for Oberlin,
Enrique Margain and freshman
Cameron Weiss won 7-5 on the top court.
Closing out the doubles sweep,
Max Brose and
Oliver Knijnenburg won 7–5 on the third court.
In singles action, Weiss continued his strong form with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4, completing another 2-0 day. Finishing next, Lisann fell 7-6, 6-1 at No. 1, before and Margain dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 3. For Margain, this is his first singles loss of the season.
After the Yellow Jackets tied the match at 2-2, Brose responded with a dominate 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.
Needing just one more point to clinch the match, first-year
Dash Smith battled back on No. 2 for a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 win, using his heavy lefty forehand to control key moments in the third set.
With the match won, Naginski, known for his high-spinning forehand, dealt the final blow and outlasted his opponent 6-7, 7-6, [10-4] at No. 6.
Sitting at 3-2 on the season, the Yeomen take a well-deserved break before returning to action next weekend, Saturday, February 21 when they head north to take on Ohio Northern.
