Fourth-Quarter Capstone Propels Oberlin Ahead of Wittenberg

Springfield, Ohio - Registering an impressive 31 points in the final quarter after shooting 61.54% from the field, the Oberlin College women's basketball team secured their first victory over Wittenberg since 2023, snapping a six-game lose streak. Finishing 73-66, the Crimson and Gold improve to 7-16 (3-9) on the season.

The 31-point quarter is the highest-scoring period for Oberlin since 2022, when they recorded 35 points in the third period en route to a 71-55 victory over Juniata.

Four Obies finished with double-digit points to contribute to the Crimson and Gold's high-scoring affair. Leading with 18 points, Angela Kumler shot 8-10 from the field while adding six rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and four steals. Lily Najmulski and Krystal Montas produced 16 points each and combined for 11 rebounds, with Najmulski going 5-8 from behind the arc. Gabby Peña-Hilzen rounded out the double-digit performers with 14 points, six rebounds, and three blocks.

Oberlin got off to an early 6-0 lead with layups from Kumler, Peña-Hilzen, and Montas. Extending their lead after a three-pointer from Najmulski, Wittenberg posted three consecutive triples to gain a slight two-point edge. Layups from Kumler and Montas helped the Crimson and Gold get back on top to close out the first period.

The two rivals went nearly point-for-point in the second frame. Tied at 20-20, Najmulski added a shot from behind the arc with 1:28 remaining. The Tigers responded with their own triple, tying Oberlin leading into the halftime break.

Trailing by three after a pair of Wittenberg triples, Ellie Pollock-Ballard notched her own long-range shot, followed by a layup from Samantha Dormer to claim a slight 32-30 advantage. The Tigers followed, recording 11 unanswered points, but Montas quickly responded, delivering eight unanswered points to close the gap. Gaining the rebound off her own shot, Kumler sent the ball to Peña-Hilzen to clinch a last-second layup for Oberlin, leading into the final quarter.

Halfway through the final session, the Crimson and Gold tallied eight straight points with five points from Kumler and a three-pointer from Najmulski. Wittenberg pushed to stay within striking distance as Oberlin posted a 7-0 run to produce a double-digit edge. Capitalizing on some Tiger fouls, the Yeowomen's nine final points came from free throws as Oberlin secured the conference victory.

"I am so proud of our team. This was a huge win today and an incredible team effort," Head Coach Stephany Dunmyer adds. "We had so many different players step up and make big-time plays on both ends of the floor. When Witt went on that run in the third quarter to take a nine-point lead, our players did a great job responding and picking up the intensity on both ends!"

The Crimson and Gold will return to action on Wednesday, February 18, when they travel to John Carroll. Evening tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
