Montas Ties Career Best as Oberlin Takes on #8 Denison

Oberlin, Ohio - Hosting their Black History Month Hype Game and their National Girls and Women in Sports Day Celebration, the Oberlin College women's basketball team faced #8 Denison on Wednesday night. Although the Crimson and Gold outshot the Big Red in the final period, the nationally-ranked visitors secured the 68-49 victory.

Leading the Oberlin offensive charge, Krystal Montas tied her career best, registering 21 points paired with 11 rebounds. Recording her second double-double of the season, the junior also added two blocks. Angela Kumler finished with double-digit points, posting 10 points as well as four rebounds and a steal.

Gabby Peña-Hilzen notched a fastbreak layup after a pass from Kumler on Oberlin's first possession. The Crimson and Gold continued to keep the nationally-ranked visitors within close margins until Denison recorded a trio of three-pointers starting at 4:18. Ellie Pollock-Ballard matched the Big Red force, producing her own fastbreak triple within the final minute of the opening period.

Administering strong defense on both ends of the court, neither team got on the board for nearly three minutes in the second quarter. Kumler added back-to-back layups towards the middle with another pair of layups from Montas, but Denison slowly pulled away to maintain a double-digit advantage going into the halftime break.

Keeping the Big Red to their lowest-scoring frame of the match, Samantha Dormer added a point from the charity stripe along with a pair of Montas layups to chip away at Denison's edge. Summer Wish closed out the session delivering a layup with eight seconds on the clock, helping Oberlin maintain the same distance that was held at the start of the period.

Shooting 50% from the field, the Crimson and Gold posted over 40% of their points in the final quarter, narrowly outshooting the Big Red. Running out of time to cut the deficit, Denison clinched the victory.

Oberlin returns to action when they travel south to Wittenberg on Saturday, February 14. Afternoon tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
