Oberlin Takes on Denison in First NCAC Contest

Granville, Ohio – The Oberlin College football team hit the road to open North Coast Athletic Conference action on Thursday night against Denison.

Massimo Vliet and Ben Suler split time in the backfield, combining for 122yds in the air while Vliet added 14yds on the ground. Their top targets included Ben Rosenblatt and CJ Cooper II, who recorded 62yds and 50yds, respectively. Daniel Pressley led the running backs with 20 carries for 85yds.

On defense, Kingston Askerneese racked up 11 solo tackles included one for a loss of three yards. Peyton Rough added another eight tackles, followed by Cameron Burke, Braedan Greenfield, and Ako Taylor II with four tackles each.

The Crimson and Gold offense picked up in the second quarter, after Vliet's deep ball on a 3rd & 2 was caught by Rosenblatt 29yds and a 1st down. An offside penalty by the Big Red moved the chains down to Denison's 25-yard line, setting the Yeomen up with a 1st & 10 just outside the redzone. On 4th down, Jackson Gartska lined up for a 37-yard field goal attempt. Snapped by Judah Moenoa, the ball said just barely right of the posts for no points.

The Yeomen picked up their momentum in the second half, when they drove 53 yards downfield into Big Red territory again. Set up inside the 30 after Pressley rushed for 13yds, the sophomore put up another seven yards to make a 2nd & 3. Vliet dropped back on the next play, aiming at Jacob Day in the corner of the endzone. Day made the leap to grab the ball but couldn't hold onto it through the tackle and the Yeomen turned over on downs.

Oberlin crossed over onto the Big Red half twice more before the game finished but were unable to find the endzone on either drive. The Yeomen fell 50-0 to the Big Red, and return home for their next contest, on Saturday, September 19 when they host Wabash (RV) on Bailey Field. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
