Oberlin, Ohio – Returning home after a two-game stint on the road, the Oberlin College field hockey team hosted Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon for their Morgan's Message Game.
First-year
Mia Rubin appeared in the cage for all 60 minutes of regulation, recording seven saves in the afternoon. The Battling Bishops recorded 16 shots with 10 on goal, holding the Crimson and Gold to just one shot. The visitors also maintained a 9-3 edge in penalty corners.
Ohio Wesleyan controlled offensive possession early, ultimately drawing back-to-back corners in the fifth minute of the contest. As the Oberlin defense held the Battling Bishops from taking a shot during the first corner, Rubin stopped Ohio Wesleyan's shot from their second corner to keep the game scoreless.
The Battling Bishops got on the board in the 24th minute after Ava Zimmer's shot slipped just under Rubin's outstretched leg. Ohio Wesleyan aimed to double their lead towards the end of the second period as Rubin kicked the attempt away.
The visitors continued their aggressive play following the halftime break, posting a trio of shots in the first five minutes. Rubin recorded a pair of saves to keep Ohio Wesleyan out of the net while
Abby Bruskin blocked a shot following a Battling Bishops corner. Ohio Wesleyan increased their lead to 2-0 following a penalty corner, as Oberlin searched for an opportunity to take a shot.
Oberlin's one shot came off the stick of
Shelby Roth with about five minutes remaining in the third frame. Following an Oberlin corner, the sophomore sent a shot from the edge of the circle, just soaring wide of the net. Ohio Wesleyan scored once more in the fourth quarter to secure the shutout victory.
"
I'm really proud of the way our team showed up and competed today. Our attention to detail, team awareness, and ability to carry our practice focuses into the game were some of the best we've seen this season. We did a much better job taking away central attacking opportunities and forcing Ohio Wesleyan to adjust how they wanted to play, and that came from our players trusting one another and staying connected as a unit," Head Coach Jess West adds. "We know we left some attacking opportunities out there that we need to execute on, but there were a lot of successful pieces from today that we can continue to build from. We're excited to take those with us into another important week of preparation as we get ready for Denison."
The Crimson and Gold return to action on Wednesday, October 7, when they travel to Denison for a 4:30 start time.
