Volleyball Pushes John Carroll to Four Sets

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team battled John Carroll on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gymnasium, earning a set victory before the Blue Streaks secured a 3-1 win (25-17, 25-20, 19-25, 25-22).

Brylie Peters led the Crimson and Gold with 23 kills, adding 17 digs and two service aces. Kira Geiger contributed nine kills and three blocks, while Klarissa Yu added six kills. Mimi Spangler dished out 34 assists and recorded three service aces, and Mary Ellen Lovelace led Oberlin with 26 digs and three aces.

The Crimson and Gold traded points with John Carroll early in the first set, with kills from Peters, Geiger and Khloe Trivoli helping the Obies stay within reach. The Blue Streaks created separation midway through the set, but Oberlin continued to find offensive opportunities through Peters and her teammates. John Carroll maintained its advantage down the stretch to take the opening set 25-17.

The second set featured another competitive start, with Geiger, Peters and Yu contributing kills for the Crimson and Gold. Oberlin added service pressure and found momentum late, stringing together points behind Lovelace, Genna Gauthier and Peters. The Obies worked to close the gap, but John Carroll held on for a 25-20 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Oberlin answered in the third set, building momentum behind Spangler at the service line. The Obies turned an early back-and-forth exchange into a scoring run, with Spangler recording multiple service aces and Peters adding several kills to extend the lead. Geiger also contributed at the net as Oberlin maintained control through the closing points. The Crimson and Gold secured the set 25-19 to force a fourth.

The fourth set remained close throughout the early exchanges, with kills from Geiger, Peters and Yu helping Oberlin keep pace. The Obies later tied the score at 17-17 and continued to trade points with the Blue Streaks. Lovelace delivered back-to-back service aces to keep Oberlin within reach, but John Carroll regained the lead late and closed out the set 25-22 to secure the 3-1 victory.
