Oberlin Hosts #8 Kenyon on Senior Day

Oberlin, Ohio – Hosting their final weekend matchup of the regular season, the Oberlin College men's soccer team took on #8 Kenyon on Senior Day.

Prior to kickoff, the Yeomen took the time to celebrate their graduating class: Vince Fortuna, Leo Pelizzari-Astle, Enrique Porras Jr., Michael Dolton, Jack Kaplan, and Kai von Fintel.

"I am really proud of this senior class. They did so much work over the last six months on our team culture, and we are in a better place because of them. While we all wanted more wins, the work they have done will be reflected in years to come," Head Coach Blake New adds.

Oberlin tallied eight shots, with three on goal, while the nationally ranked Kenyon delivered 16 shots with eight on goal. Kenyon also held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Lukas Verling and Fortuna split halves in the goal, with Verling posting the start as Fortuna recorded a pair of saves.

The Owls flexed their national ranking with an early goal at 3:33. Continuing to administer an aggressive attack, they followed with four shots as the Oberlin defense held sturdy. Pelizzari-Astle hoped to cut the Kenyon lead with a shot from inside the penalty box, but found his attempt just high of the goal. Controlling much of the offensive play, the Owls entered halftime with a 4-0 edge.

The Yeomen got on the board just over eight minutes into the second half, as Bryce Van Duinen scored off a feed from Kinton Surface. Receiving a cross from the edge of the penalty box, Van Duinen drilled a shot to the bottom left corner of the goal to score his first career goal. Following an Oberlin yellow card, Kenyon had a free kick opportunity just outside the penalty box. Delivering an incredible save, Fortuna punched the ball away to keep the Owls out of the goal.

Energy roared through the stadium as Dolton drew a penalty kick opportunity in the 79th minute. Nailing a rocket to the top right corner, the Kenyon goalkeeper dove to the bottom left as Dolton reduced the margin to 4-2. Continuing to carry the momentum of the first half, the Owls scored twice more while Fortuna saved a final attempt to the bottom center.

Oberlin returns home Wednesday, October 28, when they host John Carroll. Evening kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
