Crimson and Gold Takes Ohio Christian to Four

Circleville, Ohio – Led by a pair of double-doubles, the Oberlin College volleyball team battled Ohio Christian to four sets on Saturday afternoon (25-20, 22-25, 21-25, 26-28).

Brylie Peters led the Oberlin attack with a career-best 17 kills as well as 12 digs, claiming her second double-double of the season, while Mara Geiger posted 11 kills and 11 digs. Mimi Spangler recorded 36 assists while Mary Ellen Lovelace paced the Crimson and Gold defense with a career-best 25 digs, surpassing the 20-dig barrier for the first time.

Oberlin got off to a quick start with an early 7-1 lead, with kills from Peters and Klarissa Yu. Ohio Christian reclaimed the lead at 12-11 as the two teams battled nearly point for point. Tied at 15-15, the Crimson and Gold produced six of the next seven points to pull ahead. Continuing to connect, Oberlin claimed the first set 25-20.

Remaining neck and neck for much of the second frame, Oberlin delivered four straight points to gain a slight lead. Ohio Christian responded with six straight points, coming within two points of the set. The Crimson and Gold fought to stay in it, but Blazer's finished with the narrow 25-22 victory.

Oberlin began the third set with a quick 4-1 advantage, initiated by a kill from Lucy Goebel. Behind 6-3, Ohio Christian connected five straight points to gain a slight edge. The Crimson and Gold continued to stay within striking distance, tying their opponents at 6-6 and 12-12, but the Blazers clinched the third session.

Another close frame, Oberlin administered six of the next seven points to secure a slight 23-22 lead. At match point, a kill from Yu forced competition beyond regulation and halted another opportunity to end the match. Notching a trio of kills, Ohio Christian secured the four-set victory.

The Crimson and Gold return to action on Tuesday, October 20, when they host Kenyon. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
