Oberlin Delivers First Conference Victory of Season Against Wooster

Oberlin, Ohio – Supporting the Side-Out Foundation for their Dig Pink Game, the Oberlin College volleyball team defeated Wooster 3-1 (25-19, 14-25, 25-23, 25-16) on Wednesday night to claim their first conference victory of the season.

"I'm proud of how resilient we are this season. We showed a lot of growth, competitiveness, and fight against Wooster. We're happy as a team with the result, but we're still looking for ways to improve this season. I'm looking forward to seeing how we push through the rest of conference," Head Coach Jasmine Brown adds.

Mara Geiger led the Oberlin offense, producing a career-best 20 kills, while Kira Geiger added 13 kills. Mimi Spangler recorded a career-best 43 assists and 12 digs, surpassing the 40-assist threshold in a single game for the first time in her career. On the defensive end, Mary Ellen Lovelace posted 19 digs while K. Geiger notched a pair of blocks. Oberlin held a 60-49 edge in points and a 50-28 advantage in kills.

Maintaining a slight 9-8 lead ot start the opening set, the Crimson and Gold recorded five of the next six points, led by a K. Geiger kill to widen the gap to 14-9. Wooster kept within striking distance as Oberlin continued to pull away, claiming the first set after a K. Geiger kill from a Spangler feed.

Wooster jumped out to an early 12-1 lead in the second frame and continued to carry the momentum through the set. The Crimson and Gold pushed to stay in it, but the early advantage aided the visitors in taking the second set.

Trailing 16-12, Oberlin inched their way to the visitors with an M. Geiger kill and block from Nickiah Walker. M. Geiger continued to push with a kill and service ace, as a kill from Klarissa Yu claimed the lead. The Crimson and Gold found themselves in a slight hole, but continued to prevail as M. Geiger clinched the narrow 25-23 victory with a kill.

Tied 2-2 in the fourth session, Oberlin posted a five-point rally jump out to an early advantage. Ahead 9-7, the Obies registered seven of the next eight points to extend their edge to 16-8. The Fighting Scots battled to stay in it as Oberlin secured their fourth set and their first North Coast victory of the season.
