Oberlin Faces #8 Ohio Wesleyan in Philips

Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's basketball team faced #8 Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in Philips. Although Oberlin kept OWU from scoring as many points as in their last matchup, the Battling Bishops clinched the 71-39 victory.

Leading the offensive efforts for the Crimson and Gold, Lily Najmulski recorded 13 points, five rebounds, four assists, and a steal. The duo of Gabby Peña-Hilzen and Krystal Montas posted nine points each and combined for 14 rebounds.

On the defensive end, Angela Kumler and Samantha Dormer combined for eight rebounds while also combining for five steals.

Winning the opening jump ball and bringing the possession to Oberlin's offensive end, Najmulski sent a pass to Montas, notching a layup to get the Crimson and Gold on the board early. Ohio Wesleyan responded with a jumper as Montas followed with a second layup to regain a slight edge. Silencing the nationally-ranked opponents for over two minutes, Kumler added a pair of blocks along with a block from Peña-Hilzen to keep the Battling Bishops off the board.

Starting at 6:13, OWU delivered four consecutive layups to pull ahead to a 10-4 advantage. The Battling Bishops continued to control the offensive action, working their way to a double-digit lead until a jumper from Ellie Pollock-Ballard closed out the frame for Oberlin.

Opening the second period with a pair of triples, Ohio Wesleyan launched what would be their highest scoring quarter of the match. Recording the defensive rebound and controlling the ball to Oberlin's offensive end, Kumler battled past the OWU defense for a layup.

Following a mid-period timeout, Najmulski produced back-to-back shots from behind the arc to reduce the deficit for the Crimson and Gold. The Battling Bishops responded with their own back-to-back three-pointer surge, maintaining the double-digit advantage going into the halftime break.

Posting a layup early in the third session, Montas drew a foul to add the free-throw bonus. Going point-for-point in the first five minutes, Najmulski registered a 7-0 surge off a triple and a pair of jumpers to start chipping away at the Battling Bishops' lead. At 2:51, OWU launched their own 7-0 run to close out the period.

The Oberlin defense remained resilient as the opponents recorded their lowest-scoring quarter of the match. Despite that, the nationally-ranked competition administered their own defensive surge, making it difficult for Oberlin to get on the board and dropping the conference contest.

The Crimson and Gold will return to play when they travel to Wooster on Wednesday, February 4. Midweek tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
