Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's basketball team took on #12 John Carroll on Wednesday night. Facing the nationally-ranked opponent for the first time in the North Coast, the Blue Streaks pulled ahead with an 83-40 victory.
Krystal Montas led the scoring effort for the Crimson and Gold, recording 12 points and going 4-4 from the free throw line. The junior also added five rebounds, two blocks, and a pair of steals to the stat sheet. Lily Najmulski registered double-digit points, adding 11 points and seven rebounds.
Gabby Peña-Hilzen got Oberlin on the board to start the game, posting a layup from the baseline. Drawing a foul, the sophomore made the free throw to claim the narrow edge over John Carroll. Trailing 8-5 at 7:33, Montas produced back-to-back layups to reduce the margin. Despite a triple from Najmulski at 2:47 after a pass from
Angela Kumler, the Blue Streaks held a 20-12 advantage to end the opening quarter.
John Carroll administered a strong defense in the second quarter, making it difficult for Oberlin to find their rhythm. The Crimson and Gold kicked off offensive action in the third with a pair of free throws from Montas. Stealing the ball from the opponents, Kumler notched the fastbreak layup to chip away at the Blue Streaks lead. Montas, Kumler, and Peña-Hilzen each added a layup in the remainder of the quarter, but the nationally-ranked rival pulled away from the home team.
Receiving a pass from Noa Brown, Najmulski opened the final frame with a triple, hoping to launch an offensive surge for the Yeowomen. With 2:22 remaining on the clock, Brown added her own three from the top. Despite a strong fourth-quarter effort, Oberlin was unable to finish ahead of the nationally-ranked visitors.
The Crimson and Gold will return to action on Saturday, January 24, when they travel to Kenyon. The North Coast tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
