Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Gray Leads Oberlin to Conference Victory over Wittenberg

Oberlin, Ohio - Leading the Oberlin College men's basketball team with an offensive charge, JJ Gray helped pace the Yeomen to their second conference victory of the season. Defeating Wittenberg 54-45, Oberlin improves to 9-7 overall and 2-5 in league action.

Recording over 42% of Oberlin's points, Gray led the Yeomen with a season-high 23 points, five rebounds, and a block. Registering double-digit points for the seventh-straight game, Zach Smith added 13 points, three rebounds, and three steals.

Smith posted a triple on Oberlin's first possession to get things rolling. Gray delivered a pair of layups with another layup from Rob Magner to continue the Crimson and Gold's hot streak. Broken up by a Wittenberg jumper, Gray followed with six more points to extend their lead to 15-10 with 10:02 remaining in the half.

Maintaining the advantage at 18-9, Augustus Donohue led Oberlin with five points in an 11-point streak to extend the Yeomen lead to 29-9 at 1:19. The Tigers added back-to-back shots as Oberlin held a 29-14 edge leading into the break.

Gray opened the second half with back-to-back jumpers, allowing the Yeomen to maintain their dominating advantage. Wittenberg produced an 8-1 surge in under a two-minute span to chip away at the gap. The opponents went point-for-point until a triple from the Tigers cut the deficit to six points with 4:00 on the clock.

Battling with foul troubles on both sides, 12 of the remaining 14 points scored between the two teams in the final minute came from free throws. Remaining at the top, Oberlin secured their second conference victory.

"I'm just so proud of the guys. We knew going in how tough and physical Wittenberg is and I thought our guys matched the test," Head Coach Shiva Senthil adds. "So many guys battled tonight and it was an amazing team win. Time to keep building."

The Crimson and Gold return to Philips on Wednesday, January 21, when they host Kenyon. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. following the women's game.
