Oberlin Secures First Victory of the Season in Five-Set Thriller

Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College volleyball team claimed their first victory of their 2025 campaign in a five-set showdown as they wrapped up the Oberlin Invitational on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Crimson and Gold improve to 1-5 on the season.

"I'm proud of how we handled ourselves against Adrian College and battled through a tough match," Head Coach Jasmine Brown remarks. "We've taken that step forward to connecting with our hitters on offense and we're looking to finding our consistency."

Leading the Oberlin offense, first-year Mara Geiger registered 16 kills and four aces, while classmate Brylie Peters produced a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs and senior Josie Macdonald tallied 10 kills and 10 digs. Splitting duties as the setter, senior Jillian Jendsen led the Crimson and Gold with a season-high 25 assists while sophomore Genna Gauthier recorded 13 assists. Returning as the libero once again, senior Iris Archibald posted 17 digs.

Both teams put up a tough battle to open the match, exchanging points and producing three ties before a fourth tie at 10-10. Following an Adrian setting error, Geiger delivered a trio of kills to push the lead to 14-10. The Crimson and Gold continued to pull ahead, capitalizing on a strong offense with kills from Peters, Macdonald, and Lucy Goebel. The Bulldogs notched a four-point run to reduce the margin, but a final kill from Geiger off a pass from Jendsen secured the 25-21 set victory for Oberlin.

Tied at 7-7 in the second frame, the Crimson and Gold posted an eight-point surge to extend their lead to 15-7. Adrian responded with an 8-1 rally to reduce their deficit to 16-15. Oberlin continued to put pressure on the Bulldogs, but Adrian narrowly claimed the set 25-23.

The third stanza saw the best offense of the day for the Crimson and Gold, finishing with a .304 hitting percentage. Ahead by one point, Oberlin registered an eight-point burst to increase their edge to 19-10. An Adrian block ended their scoring drought, but the Bulldogs posed no contest for the Crimson and Gold as they claimed the set off a final ace from Macdonald.

Behind by one point in the fourth set, Adrian notched a six-point run to claim a 17-12 advantage. Oberlin continued to persevere, posting five more kills within the set, but the Bulldogs were able to force a fifth set after recording their best hitting percentage of the match.

Holding a narrow 8-7 lead in the final frame, the Crimson and Gold delivered a 6-1 rally capped off by a Macdonald kill to extend their lead to 14-8. An Adrian kill attempted to disrupt Oberlin's momentum, but a final Peters kill secured the victory for the Crimson and Gold.

Oberlin will return to play on Wednesday, September 10, when they travel to Hiram College. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
