Oberlin, Ohio - Taking time to honor their eight seniors,
Alison Grant,
Sophie Wilson,
Jemma Freestone,
Meena Lee,
Madalyn New,
Elena Foley,
Ashlee Hiller, and
Zoe Steinhauer prior to their game, the Oberlin College women's soccer team cruised past former conference foe Hiram 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Crimson and Gold advance to 3-3-2 on the season.
Sophomore Roam Redington opened the match in the net. First-year Maddie Cooper made her collegiate debut in the second half, recording two saves.
Starting scoring action early for Oberlin, Wilson gained control of the ball after a throw-in to bring it to an open area on the field. Wilson sent a pass to Lee, who nailed it to the bottom left corner of the cage less than three minutes into the match to claim an early lead for Oberlin.
Continuing their offensive momentum, the Crimson and Gold secured a free kick twenty-five yards from the net. Bouncing off a Terrier head, the Yeowomen were able to capitalize off of the corner to double their lead. Steinhauer sent a perfect pass just in front of the goal to set it up for the Oberlin offense. Wilson sent a shot towards the net that was saved by the Hiram goalkeeper. First-year Molly Button seized control of the ball and drilled a shot just left of the goalie at 13:33 to put the Crimson and Gold up 2-0.
Bringing the ball past the Terrier backline, sophomore Sawyer Ramberg crossed the ball to rookie Zoey Edmiaston, who slipped the ball into the open goal to extend Oberlin's lead to 3-0 with 3:33 remaining in the half.
Opening the second period with Cooper making an appearance in the net, Hiram sent a shot on target past the Crimson and Gold defense. Positioned on the edge of the goal area, Cooper jumped up, catching the ball to produce her first career save. Oberlin brought the ball back to their offensive end as Steinhauer and rookie Riley Galpin posted back-to-back shots, both of which were stopped by the Terrier keeper.
Following a Hiram corner, both teams battled to gain possession of the ball. Sending the ball from the far right edge of the field, the Terriers' Bella Simmons headed the ball toward the net. Cooper ran forward to snatch the ball, registering her second save of the game. For much of the remainder of the game, Oberlin dominated the time of possession until time expired, clinching their second shutout victory of the year.
"It is incredibly rewarding to see many of our seniors contribute to the strong offensive effort of this game," Head Coach Taylor Houck continues. "We entered this game with a lot of positive energy and look to carry this momentum forward."
The Crimson and Gold will resume action on Wednesday, September 24 when they host Heidelberg for their Pride Day game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
