Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College softball team played a cold and rainy game against Baldwin Wallace on Monday afternoon. After a hot start for the Yellow Jackets, Oberlin fell 14-3, and move to 2-19 on the season.
Splitting responsibilities in the circle,
Sophie Stone and
Olivia Bey finished with three strikeouts through 36 batters.
Baldwin Wallace jumped on the board early in the first inning, scoring on an error by the Crimson and Gold infield. After tacking on another, the bats broke. loose and BW took a 5-0 lead at the end of the inning. Oberlin was unable to get any momentum going as the visitors continued to thrive in the wind and rain.
Facing a 14-run defiict, the Yeowomen finally found their footing behind the heavy hitting of
Maya Means. The junior drove the ball deep into centerfield, bringing
Roxie Freifeld to home plate. With Means on second and
Haley Carlson on third,
Grace Gordon walked to load the bases.
Leslie Sullivan responded with a 2 RBI double to the centerfield wall, cutting into the Yellow Jackets' lead. Grounding out in the next at bat, Oberlin looked to have built momentum for the top of the fifth.
After letting one runner on base, Stone held strong to force a pop fly into right field.
Wren Norris,
Ava Soldo, and Bey up to bat, the Obies were unable to connect again and ultimately fell in five innings.
Oberlin returns to the diamond on Friday, April 11 when they open their home conference schedule against DePauw. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. with the second half of the doubleheader scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
