Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College softball team dropped a pair of games against DePauw on Friday evening. The 12-2 and 13-2 losses move the Crimson and Gold to 2-21 (0-4) on the season.
In game one, the Tigers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, before the Yeowomen responded in the bottom of the third after
Roxie Freifeld scored on a wild pitch. The heads up play cut the lead to one, but DePauw settled and struck back in the next three innings to take a 12-1 lead.
Looking to stave off the run-rule loss,
Wren Norris singled up the middle in the bottom of the sixth to give Oberlin early momentum. Stealing second and third, Norris came home after
Maya Means flew out to center field. Unable to get the ensuing batters on base, Oberlin closed the game after the sixth inning.
Sophie Stone and
Olivia Bey split pitching responsibilities in the game, combining for four strikeouts while Stone earned the start in the circle.
With game two getting a later start time, the Yeowomen struggled to regain their momentum from the end of the first game. DePauw controlled the majority of the contest, bringing in 13-straight runs before the Crimson and Gold got on the board.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Ava Soldo singled up the middle in the leadoff spot. After
Olivia Gonzalez pinch ran for the rookie, Gonzalez was caught stealing just inches shy of the second base bag.
Jess Friedman responded with a hit out to left field before
Kailey Dunham advanced the senior to second and got to first herself.
Roam Redington came in to pinch run for the DP, just before
Haley Carlson advanced to first on a fielder's choice.
Although Friedman got the short end of the FC,
Leslie Sullivan hit a bomb to left field for a 2RBI double to bring home Carlson and Redington. With two on the board,
Grace Gordon came just shy of bringing in Sullivan as the Yeowomen finished 13-2 in the fifth.
Oberlin makes a quick pivot for their next game when they hit the road south to take on Ohio Wesleyan. The Saturday, April 12 doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m. with game two set for 3 p.m.
