University Heights, Ohio – Making up a weather game from March, the Oberlin College softball team played a doubleheader against John Carroll on Sunday afternoon. After falling in extra innings 1-0 in game one, the team fell 2-1 in game two as they move to 2-18 on the season.
The Yeowomen saw a historic performance from
Sophie Stone in the circle, recording 12 strikeouts in game two. This ties her own record for the most strikeouts in a single game since she set the record against Salem on March 9. The rookie hurler now has 45 Ks on the season, putting her at 11
th all-time with 17 games remaining.
It was a perfect deadlock between the soon-to-be conference foes in game one, as the score sat at 0-0 through the bottom of the seventh. Oberlin's best opportunity to score came in the top of the fourth, with
Wren Norris,
Maya Means, and
Jess Friedman all on base. Loaded on offense, the Yeowomen struck out swinging to end the inning.
After Oberlin went 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth, an error put JCU's leadoff batter on base. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second, just before a single up the middle brought the Blue Streaks home for the walk-off.
Roam Redington, Means, and Norris all stole bases in the game, while
Hailey Alspach finished with four strikeouts, ten fly outs, and eight ground outs.
Oberlin jumped out first in game two after Norris reached base on an error by the shortstop. Stealing second and third, Norris made it home on another error by the Blue Streaks. JCU struck back in the second inning, after combination of walks and steals gave way for the runner to advance home on a wild pitch. Tied up 1-1, JCU knocked one out of the park to take a one-run lead.
The ensuing innings went 1-2-3 for the pair of teams, until Oberlin faced the top of the seventh, needing to score.
Olivia Bey singled to start the comeback. Alspach came in to pinch run for Bey, but was caught stealing just moments later. A ground out and a pop fly later, Oberlin settled for the 2-1 loss.
After 20-straight games on the road, Oberlin is set to finally open their home schedule on Monday, April 7 when they host Baldwin Wallace for a doubleheader on Culhane Field. Game one is set for 3:30 p.m., with game two following at approx. 5:30 p.m.
