Oberlin, Ohio – Wrapping up their regular season as the winningest class in school history (41 wins), the Oberlin College men's lacrosse team celebrated their senior in style with a 13-2 victory over DePauw on Saturday afternoon. After a successful day celebrating
Justin Bader,
Joe Barocas,
Gavin Girard,
Aidan Johnston,
Sam Ryu,
Cole Tashjian, and
Jonas Taylor-Lillquist, the Yeomen improve to 11-4 on the season and finish 5-3 in conference.
Notching a hat trick in the senior game, first-year
Nicholas Cuda led the team with three goal and an assist.
Asher Friedman and
Solomon Brennan tallied three points each, with
Jacob Starcke and
Christian Tacogue combined for a balanced four goals.
Leading the defense, senior long pole Girard had a career day with six ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Cooper Rand chimed in with five scoops and two spills, while Barocas held down the cage with six saves.
It took a few minutes, but once the Crimson and Gold got rolling, they never looked back. Sophomore
Colin Taylor caused a turnover on the Tigers, scooping the ball and finding Starcke for the first score of the day. The Yeomen went back-to-back behind Tacogue and
Andrew Rosa.
Scoring two more before the end of the quarter, Oberlin carried a 5-0 lead into the second period where they picked up where they left off. Taylor connected with the attack again, this time leading to a Cuda goal. Another trio of quick scores and unfruitful possession for DePauw put Oberlin up 9-0 at the halftime break.
Coming out, it was a dogfight between the conference foes, with only the Yeomen scoring in the minute of the third. After a slew of turnovers by both teams, Brennan came up with the ball to put it in the back of the net with 43 seconds remaining.
After shutting out DePauw through three quarters, Oberlin added one more goal before the Tigers finally got on the board. Giving up two-straight, Oberlin regained control of the game after Friedman connected with Brennan. Closing out the senior day in the best way possible, soon-to-be-grad, Johnston, notched the final goal of the game with just seconds remaining.
Returning to the NCAC Tournament for the second time under Head Coach
Ryan Polak, Oberlin will head to top-seed Ohio Wesleyan for their second meeting in just 11 days. Set to faceoff on Wednesday, April 30, the Yeomen take on the Battling Bishops at 4 p.m. in Delaware, Ohio.
