Crimson and Gold Take on Wittenberg

Springfield, Ohio – Playing a doubleheader on the road, the Oberlin College softball team travelled south to take on Wittenberg on Sunday afternoon. After a hot start to game one, Yeowomen fell in both games, 5-2 and 13-0.
 
Sophie Stone led the team in the circle, throwing four strikeouts through 87 pitches and 26 at bats. From the box, Maya Means kept the bats hot going 1-2 with a double in the top of the fifth.
 
The Crimson and Gold struck first in the first game, scoring Hailey Alspach after Ava Soldo singled out to right field. Up 1-0 after their first inning, Oberlin extended their lead to two in the top of the third. Alspach singled to first, then stole second and third before Roxie Freifeld hit an RBI to bring the junior home.
 
Wittenberg responded in the bottom half of the third to tie the game, the claimed a 4-2 lead ahead of the fourth. The Tigers added one more run to take a 5-2 and close the game 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh.
 
Alspach and Olivia Bey split time in game two, led by Alspach who pitched 3.0 innings. Alspach contributed from the bags as well, joining Haley Carlson and Alexis Croatt with a stolen base each. Oberlin totaled four hits in the game, one each coming from Alspach, Freifeld, Carlson, and Kailey Dunham.
 
The Tigers score five runs in the bottom of the first, before adding another six in the second to force the run rule. Oberlin's best chance to score came in the fourth when Carlson got on base with two outs. After Roam Redington came in to pinch run, the Tigers picked off the rookie to end the inning.
 
The Yeowomen take a short break from North Coast action to host Capital for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 29, beginning at 3 p.m. Game two is slated to start at 5 p.m.
