Oberlin, Ohio – Scoring a trio of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in game two, the Oberlin College softball team came up just short in a pair of games against Kenyon on Wednesday evening. Game one saw the Crimson and Gold fall 8-0, while game two was 9-5 loss.
Hailey Alspach and
Olivia Bey split innings in the top of the doubleheader, combining for a trio of strikeouts through 110 pitches. Alspach led the team on the bags as well, with a pair of stolen bases and the lone hit of the game.
After Alspach's hit to leadoff the game, the bats fell quiet for Oberlin while Kenyon paced out eight runs.
In game two,
Sophie Stone earned the start in the circle with one strikeout through 1.2 innings. Facing a momentous offense in the Owls, Alsapch came in for relief for the final 5.1 innings where she collected six strikeouts.
After Kenyon put up six unanswered runs, the Yeowomen finally responded when
Jess Friedman singled through the left side to bring
Roam Redington home. Thanks to a hit by
Ava Soldo at the top of the order, Redington pinch ran after Soldo reach secondbase before the Friedman hit.
On the board with one, Oberlin added another behind Alspach's speed and errors on the defense. Down 9-2 to start the bottom of the seventh, Roxie Friefeld's hit down the right line pushed
Olivia Gonzalez home. The hits kept coming with a
Wren Norris single up the middle to bring Friefeld around the bases. Following the sophomore, classmate
Grace Gordon drove the ball into the outfield for
Haley Carlson to round third and head home.
Cutting the lead to 9-5, Oberlin's momentum slowed to a halt after Kenyon made a pair of incredible plays to fly out the Obies.
The Crimson and Gold take a short rest before returning to the diamond when they hit the road on Sunday, April 27 to take on Wittenberg. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m., with game two following at 3 p.m.
