Granville, Ohio – Traveling south to take on the top team in the conference, the Oberlin College softball dropped two to the Denison Big Red. Falling 3-0 in game one, Oberlin dropped the second game 8-0.
Notching an impressive eight strikeouts against a heavy batting team, Sophie Stone pitched 6.0 innings in the circle.
Although Oberlin's bats were held at bay in the first game, Haley Carlson notched the only hit for the Crimson and Gold. Hitting in the leadoff spot at the top of the fourth, Carlson made her way to second before getting caught stealing third. The junior later walked in the top of seventh, but was unable to convert the opportunity after a fielder's choice took her out two batters later.
Olivia Bey opened up game two for Oberlin, forcing 12 ground outs and a pair of fly outs through 6.0 innings. Stone came in for relief in the final inning, striking out both of the batters she faced.
The Yeowomen picked up the pace in game two, seeing hits from Leslie Sullivan, Carlson, and Bey. Sullivan and Carlson's hits came in the top of the first, opening up the game with a fiery start. Oberlin was unable to convert on either of the hits, leaving the inning scoreless.
Oberlin continued their momentum in the second inning after Bey singled out to center field. Left on base after a strikeout and a lineout, the Yeowomen didn't get on base again before Denison scored eight runs to end the game after six innings.
Returning to the field for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 23, Oberlin continues their conference slate against Kenyon. The Crimson and Gold will honor Strikeout Cancer, an organization that raises money for caner researched through the Randy Shaver Cancer Fund.
