Wilmington, Ohio - The Oberlin College baseball team ended their seven-game skid with a commanding 15-3 win against Wilmington College on Sunday afternoon.
Â
After only mustering five total hits in a doubleheader versus Denison University the day prior, Oberlin's offense erupted for 16 hits, with three going for extra bases.
Â
Freshman
Matthew Ruttkay got his third start of the season on the mound in the non-conference matchup. The right-hander was exceptional, firing six innings of three-run ball while striking out six to earn his first collegiate win.Â
Â
The Yeomen offense jumped on the Quakers in the top of the first. With one runner on, sophomore infielder
Kyle Baxt cracked a sharp single up the middle for his 100th career hit.Â
Â
"It felt awesome collecting my 100th career hit," Baxt said postgame. "It's a huge honor. I'm happy I've put good swings on the ball and it helped the team pick up a much-needed win."
Â
With the bases loaded and one out, freshman infielder
Samuel Labrecque was hit by a pitch, scoring senior outfielder
Zach Masnikoff who reached on an error to lead off the game. After a wild pitch scored Baxt from third, freshman infielder
Ryan Robinson smoked a sacrifice fly to the wall in right-center to score sophomore outfielder
Brady Groves who had singled earlier in the inning to give Oberlin a quick 3-0 lead.
Â
With one out in the top of the second, Groves ripped a double into the left-center gap and came around to score on a line drive single through the left side by Labrecque to make it a 4-0 game. Groves and Labrecque both finished with three hits on the day.Â
Â
In the top of the fourth, Baxt registered the 101st hit of his career, a booming three-run home run just inside the left field foul pole to put the Yeomen up 7-0.
Â
The offense remained relentless in the top of the fifth. With two outs, freshman infielder
Jeffery Chen was hit by a pitch, flipping the lineup back to the top of the order. Masnikoff roped a triple off the center fielder's glove in right-center to score Chen from first and make it an eight-nothing game. Senior shortstop
Zachary Ritts and Baxt followed with RBI singles to put the Yeomen up by ten.Â
Â
In the top of the sixth, the Yeomen continued to add on; scoring three runs on two hits to take a 13-1 lead heading into the late innings.
Â
Freshman
Lachlan Nichol came on in relief of Ruttkay in the top of the seventh. Nichol had the best outing of his young career, earning his first career save after throwing three scoreless innings, only allowing one hit and striking out three.Â
Â
Oberlin capped off their offense outburst in the top of the ninth. Freshman outfielder
Joshua Patterson delivered a two-out, two RBI line-drive single through the left side to make it a 15-3 game.
Â
Ten different Yeomen recorded hits as Oberlin won in dominant fashion.
Â
The win moves Oberlin to 8-18 while Wilmington falls to 8-18.Â
Â
The Yeomen are back on the diamond Wednesday for a conference doubleheader against Hiram College. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
