Delaware, Ohio – Just one day after a grueling doubleheader, the Oberlin College softball team returned to the diamond for a conference doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan. The Yeowomen fell in both games, dropping to 2-23 on the season, and 0-6 in the NCAC.
Hailey Alspach earned the start in the circle, going 4.0 innings and recording a pair of strikeouts.
Sophie Stone came in for relief in the final inning to close the game for the Yeowomen.
The lead hurler put Oberlin on the board first, after stealing second and third to score on an error by the OWU catcher. After
Kailey Dunham doubled through left field to get on base,
Alexis Croatt knocked one down the left line to bring the junior to home plate.
Once up 2-0, the Yeowomen knocked out OWU 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the opening inning. The Battling Bishops got on the board in the bottom of the second, then took a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Yeowomen were unable to regain control of the game and ultimately fell 10-2 as the home team sealed the victory in the fifth inning.
The Crimson and Gold were busy in the circle for game two, beginning with Alspach through 1.2 innings, relieved by
Olivia Bey for 2.0 innings, and Stone closing out the game in the final .1.
The momentum from game one carried over for Ohio Wesleyan, as the home team tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Oberlin's best chance to score came in the top of the fifth, when
Grace Gordon came in to pinch hit for
Haley Carlson. The sophomore doubled down the right field line to grab the team's fourth hit of the game. Down 11-0, the momentum stopped there for Oberlin as OWU collected their third out to leave Gordon stranded on base and end the game
Oberlin takes a well-deserved break before returning to action next weekend, Saturday April 19 for a doubleheader against Denison. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. with the second game following at 3 p.m.
