Oberlin, Ohio - Oberlin Baseball dropped both games of a weekend doubleheader against the #4 Denison Big Red. Despite solid efforts on the mound, the Yeomen were unable to get anything going at the plate; losing game one 4-0 before falling 10-0 in game two.
Â
Sophomore
Calvin Burkholder was a bright spot for the Yeomen in game one. In his seventh start of the season, Burkholder was dominant.Â
Â
In the top of the first, Denison had runners on the corners with two outs. Burkholder kept them there, striking out his first batter of the day on a slider down and away.
Â
In the next inning, the Big Red once again found themselves with runners on the corners and two out. Yet, Burkholder did not break. Inducing a weak flyout to left to keep the game tied.Â
Â
After a clean third and fourth inning, Burkholder faced more traffic on the bases in the top of the fifth. Dension was able to scrap one run across on a sac fly to left, putting them ahead 1-0 heading into the late innings.Â
Â
Burkholder's line ended after seven strong innings that saw the 6 '3 right-hander surrender five hits and one run while striking out four.
Â
"It's always a challenge when you face the number four team in the country," Burkholder said. "If I can put our team in a position to win, then I've done my job."
Â
The Big Red went on to add two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to put the game out of reach.Â
Â
Oberlin could get nothing going offensively in game one, only managing three hits while striking out 16 times.
Â
In game two, Dension jumped out to a big lead in the early innings. Behind three hits and poor Yeomen defense, the Big Red put up a five spot in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.Â
Â
The same formula continued in the top of the third for the Big Red; scoring four runs on three hits and an error to go up 9-0.
Unfortunately, the Yeomen bats were unable to get going in game two either. Oberlin finished with two hits.
Â
Sophomore
Grayson Black got the nod for the Yeomen in the nightcap. The right-hander ran into trouble after a clean top of the first inning.Â
Â
Black finished his day going three innings, giving up nine runs (four earned) and striking out two.
Â
Freshman
Samuel Labrecque relieved Black in the bullpen and effectively kept Denison at bay through the late innings. Labrecque threw four strong innings, allowing one run on one hit and five walks while striking out two.
Â
Oberlin is now 7-18, 0-6 in NCAC play while Denison moves to 20-4, 5-1 in NCAC play.
Â
The Yeomen are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, April 13, at Wilmington College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
