Stone Breaks Strikeout Record in Salem Doubleheader

Winston-Salem, North Carolina – After a getting on the board first in both games, the Oberlin College softball team went 0-2 in their doubleheader against the Salem Spirits. The Yeowomen return home 1-5 after their three-day trip in North Carolina.

Hailey Alspach earned the start in the circle for the Crimson and Gold, throwing 71 pitches through six innings. The junior triple-threat put Oberlin on the board in the top of the first inning after reaching first on an error, stealing second and third, then touching home plate on a wild pitch.

After the exciting start to the game, the Oberlin defense held Salem scoreless through five innings. The Spirits broke loose in the bottom of the sixth, tacking on six runs and capitalizing on a slew of miscues from Oberlin. Dow 6-1, the hill was too steep to climb as Oberlin fell in game one against Salem.

In just her third start, Sophie Stone put together one of the greatest pitching games in recent memory, notching an astounding 12 strikeouts, and one earned run on just five hits.

Just 24 hours after hitting the first homer of the season, Maya Means struck the ball deep into the left field gap for an RBI double. Advancing to third on an Ava Soldo ground out, the inning stopped just short of Means reaching home plate. Stone went 1-2-3 over the next two innings to keep the Crimson and Gold in the game.

Salem picked up speed in the bottom of the third, scoring the equalizer off a sacrifice fly to right field. Tied up 1-1, Soldo singled up the middle, but the Oberlin bats went cold and left the rookie stranded on second.

As the bottom of the seventh rolled around, the two teams remained tangled at one apiece. Salem's Maleah Tate singled through third base, setting putting the go-ahead run on base. Stealing second and then advancing to third on a pass ball, Stone held off the junior with another strikeout at the plate. It all came together for the Spirits when Reese Upton hit a sacrifice ball into center field, giving Tate enough time to tag and sprint home.

The Crimson and Gold take a well-deserved break before returning to the diamond next weekend, Saturday, March 15 when they travel to Chatham for a doubleheader. Game one is slated for 11:30 a.m., with the second game set for 1:30 p.m.
