Los Angeles, California – In their final game in the Golden State, the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team dug deep to take down Occidental 15-11 on Thursday night. The wins push Oberlin to 6-4 on the year ahead of conference play.
In a career high-performance, junior
Megan Hiller strung together five goals and two assists for a team-best seven points. Following lead, senior
Izzy Sunday notched four goals and two assists to finish with six points.
Kylie Thompson and
Olivia Corradi also finished with multiple goals, each adding two while Thompson dished out an assist.
Standing tall,
Emily Berger played a complete 60 minutes in cage, making 11 saves and collecting three ground balls. Alongside her on defense,
Maddie Weathers came out with seven ground balls, tying her career high set earlier this season. Weathers caused another pair of turnovers, along with
Phoebe Dolan who came away with two CTOs and a team-high five draw controls.
Sophie Ward and
Rachel Reiter combined for another five draw controls on the day.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring right off the draw in the first minute of action. Capitalizing on back-to-back man-up opportunities, the Yeowomen even the game behind goals from Sunday and Corradi. Tied up at 2-2, Oxy added another three before Hiller connected with Sunday to end the drought. Lined up on the hashes in the final minute,
Maddie Darlington put the ball away to put Oberlin just one goal behind the lead.
The momentum continued for the Yeowomen with a rip from Thompson after
Larissa Andrick found her inside the eight. Tied again, the team the two teams swapped goals with an score off the free position from
Alexis Escobedo. The Tigers added two more before the end of the half to a take a 8-6 lead.
It was all Oberlin in the third period, beginning with consecutive scores from Hiller. Corradi and Hiller combined for two more to give the Crimson and Gold their first lead of the game at 10-8. Cut up by a lone goal from Oxy, Thompson connected with Sunday in the final seconds for an 11-9 lead heading into the last quarter.
With the wind at their back, the Yeowomen continued to spread the distance with another pair of goals to start the fourth. With 7:01 remaining, the Tigers scored their first of the final quarter. Adding another just minutes later, the final boost for Occidental fell short as Oberlin responded with a pair of their own to clinch the California victory.
"We knew tonight would be another tough battle with a great team. We held on for the first half of the game, but knew we needed to come up big in the second half if we wanted this one. They stepped up big and played some fantastic lacrosse to finish the game." Head Coach
Malory Nadrah reflects on the team's individual performances, "Megan and Izzy dominated on the attacking end. Rachel and Phoebe played gritty on the circle fo us, and our defensive matchups played another huge role for us again. These two spring break wins are huge heading into conference play."
Oberlin returns to action when they open conference play against Wooster on Saturday, April 5 on the road. The NCAC rivals will get underway at 1 p.m.
