Oberlin Battles from Behind in Florida Doubleheader

Clermont, Florida – Taking on a pair of teams in the Florida sun, the Oberlin College softball team lost to Luther 3-2 before dropping to Lawrence 8-3. Moving to 2-12, Oberlin looks ahead to their final day of spring break competition.

After a slow start to the game, the Yeowomen finally got on base after starting pitcher, Hailey Alspach, got to first base on a bunt. The junior stole second and third before a Wren Norris hit down the right field line to bring Alspach home. Cutting into the Norse lead, Alspach evened it up with a triple down the left line to bring Olivia Gonzalez home. Gonzalez pinch ran for Ava Soldo, who double to left field earlier in the inning.

Tied at 2-2, the Crimson and Gold took the lead in the top of the seventh when Norris hit down the right line, scoring Alexis Croatt who walked to get on base.

Up 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Oberlin's miscues shifted the momentum in favor of the Norse, loading the bases with one out remaining. A hit up the middle turned into an error on the infield, giving way for Luther to bring home their third and fourth run to walk off Oberlin.

Oberlin recorded seven hits in the game, giving up just one strikeout through 25 at bats. For Alspach, the junior pitched 6.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts, one earned run, through 32 batters faced.

In Oberlin's second game of the day, Lawrence got the jump on the tired Obies, taking a 3-0 in the first inning. The Yeowomen bounced back in the third behind hits from Croatt and Norris, and a sacrifice bunt from Alspach. With Croatt on third and Norris on first, the duo executed a perfectly designed double steal, befuddling the Vikings and allowing both runners to safely steal home and second base.

Still behind 3-1, Oberlin saw Lawrence tack on another pair of runs after an error reached the leadoff batter and a handful of sacrificial fly outs brought runners home. It was Norris-Alspach again to score for Oberlin, this time with a single to center field coming off the bat of Norris, running Alspach home from second base.

Lawrence continued to add runs to the scoreboard, taking an 8-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. After a gritty fight in the batter's box, Leslie Sullivan knocked one up the middle to get on base. Making the heads up plays when it matters most, the rookie advanced to second and third on passed balls. A ground out to second off the bat of Norris brough Sullivan home, but that was the last of Oberlin's momentum as they settled for the 8-3 loss.

The Yeowomen take on Wisconsin-Platteville and Colby tomorrow, Friday, March 28. Beginning with the Pioneers at 12:15 p.m., Oberlin next plays Colby at 2:30 p.m. to wrap up their spring break trip.
