Clermont, Florida – On their last day in the Sunshine State, the Oberlin College softball team dropped a pair of games against the tourney's best completion. Oberlin first fell to Wisconsin-Platteville 9-1 in five innings, then dropped to Colby 11-2 in six innings. The losses move the Yeowomen to 2-13 on the season.
As they often do, Oberlin struck first after
Jess Friedman singled up the middle. Stealing second, a hit from
Alexis Croatt moved the senior to third. Friedman made her way home on a throwing error by the catcher, putting the Crimson and Gold in the lead.
Hailey Alspach shut the Pioneers out in the ensuing innings, but Platteville broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Rotating through
Sophie Stone and
Olivia Bey in the fifth, the Pioneers clinched the game with five more runs to force the run rule.
Facing an immediate turnaround for game two against Colby, Alspach started in the circle again. Striking out the first batter, the Mules managed to tack on one run before Alspach caught a line drive to end the inning. In the bottom half,
Maya Means continued her dominance in the batter's box with a bomb over the left field fence. This marks the second homer of the season for Oberlin, both coming from the two-way junior. Means finished the day 5-5 and continues to lead Oberlin batters with a .472 batting average.
Although managing to hold Colby off in the second inning, the Mules regained their momentum and added a consistent stream of runs, with a hefty four coming in the top of the sixth. Facing an early end to the game,
Ava Soldo kept the Yeowomen's hope alive with a hit up the middle to bring
Roxie Freifeld down the third base line.
Oberlin takes a short break before returning to action next on Wednesday, April 2. The Yeowomen head to Bluffton for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
